Who should attend: vehicle technicians working in the heavy and transport sector of the motor industry. This includes those working on public service vehicles and emergency services appliances.
Course aims and objectives: to provide heavy vehicle technicians with the knowledge and skills required for carrying out effective fault finding and diagnosis of vehicle electrical systems.
Course outline: this is a comprehensive technical course covering the following main subjects:
- Health and Safety
- Review of electrical theory
- Digital multi meter functions and accessories
- Circuit testing techniques
- ISO/DIN relays and electronic relays
- Wiring diagrams and workshop information systems
- Understanding electrical systems
- Batteries, charging and starting systems diagnostics
- Oscilloscopes
- Diagnostic equipment
- Sensors and actuators
- Practical fault finding and diagnostic
routines
- Course assessment
The course comprises of workshop practical sessions using live vehicles, further supported by classroom based technical presentations and discussions.

During the course, participants learn how to effectively combine best use of a wide range of test instruments and diagnostic equipment. This includes digital multi meters. oscilloscopes, diagnostic equipment, wiring diagrams and technical information systems.

Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the course via multiple choice questionnaires and observation of practical activities.

IRTEC Accreditation
This course has certified recognition from the Institute of Road Transport Engineers (IRTE). For those working towards gaining an IRTEC license, the course is also accredited as a supplementary module at Advanced Technician level under the IRTEC Technician Licensing scheme.
