Vehicle electrical fault finding techniques

Duration: 2 days

Who should attend: vehicle technicians and those with relevant background who would like to learn more about the techniques required for successful fault finding of modern vehicle electrical systems. Experienced technicians would also find this course to be a useful refresher.

Aims and objectives: to assist vehicle technicians with developing their electrical knowledge and fault finding skills.

Course outline: this is a practical vehicle electrics course covering the following main subjects:

  • Review of electrical theory.
  • Digital multi meter functions and accessories.
  • Circuit testing techniques.
  • ISO and DIN relays.
  • Electronic relays.
  • Wiring diagrams and workshop information.
  • Understanding electrical systems.
  • Batteries, charging and starting systems diagnostics.
  • Introduction to oscilloscope.
  • Practical fault finding routines.
  • Course assessment.

Course aims and objectives will be achieved through a range of classroom presentations and workshop based practical sessions using live vehicles.

Participants will learn how to take accurate, reliable test measurements, analyse the results and identify good and bad test readings. The course explains in detail how to read and understand wiring diagrams.

The course also covers ISO and DIN relays, electronic relays and up to date techniques for testing and diagnosis of batteries, charging and starting systems.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply what they have learnt for carrying out cost effective fault finding and diagnosis of  vehicle electrical systems.

Assessment is on going throughout the course and the course is accredited for a Quality Assured Award (QAA) certificate from IMI Awards Ltd.
