Who should attend

Vehicle technicians and those with relevant motor industry background and experience who would like to learn more about modern petrol engine management systems and diagnostic techniques.

Course aims

To explain the functions and operation of modern petrol engine management systems and how to carry out effective fault finding and diagnosis.

Course content:

• Engine ECM critical inputs
• Fuel systems and diagnostics

(including GDI)

• Ignition systems and diagnostics

(including ionization detection and capacitive discharge)

• Exhaust gas analysis
• Catalytic converter diagnosis
• Closed loop control and short term fuel trim

(including briadband O2 sensor)

• Long term fuel trim and adaption
• Electronic throttle and engine torque control
• Air mass and charge air control diagnosis
• EGR diagnosis
• Emergency operating modes
• Live data graphing and snapshot
• Fault finding techniques
• Workshop session: diagnose engine management faults

By the end of the course, delegates will have gained detailed knowledge and understanding of how to carry out cost effective fault finding and diagnosis of modern petrol engine management systems.

They will be able to integrate use of all available tools and technical information and put into practice logical fault finding routines and disciplines.

Pre requisites for attending this course

This course involves extensive use of diagnostic scan tools, oscilloscopes, test equipment and workshop technical information including wiring diagrams.

To be accepted on this course, candidates must be competent with use of all of the above tools and equipment and be either actively employed in the motor industry or have relevant background.
